Duco ventilation unit hums
Is your Duco ventilation unit or HRV unit humming? A humming sound is often caused by worn bearings, a heavy-running motor, contamination, or resonance of the ventilation unit or ductwork.

What do you notice?
- A low hum from the ventilation unit.
- The humming gets worse at a higher ventilation setting.
- Vibrations through the wall, ceiling, or ventilation ducts.
- The motor is still running but sounds heavier than usual.
Possible causes
- Worn bearings.
- Imbalance of fan or motor.
- Contamination of fan wheel or motor.
- Resonance of the ventilation unit or ductwork.
What can you check yourself?
Check whether the hum comes from the motor itself or is amplified via the housing or ventilation ducts. Also, pay attention to whether the sound changes when you select a different ventilation setting. Always de-energize the ventilation unit before opening it.
