Buva ventilation unit making noise

Is your Buva ventilation unit or HRV unit making more noise than usual? A humming, grinding, rattling, or squealing sound often indicates motor wear, worn bearings, or fan contamination. In many cases, refurbishment is a sustainable and cost-effective solution.

What do you notice?

  • The ventilation unit makes more noise than before.
  • A humming, grinding, rattling or squealing sound.
  • The noise increases with a higher ventilation setting.
  • Vibrations through walls, ceiling or ventilation ducts.

Possible causes

  • Worn bearings or rotating parts.
  • Contamination of fan or motor.
  • Imbalance of the fan wheel.
  • Wear of motor or mounting rubbers.

What can you check yourself?

Listen carefully to the type of sound and check if the sound changes when you select a different ventilation setting. Always switch off the power to the ventilation unit before opening or inspecting it.

When is overhaul possible?

When the noise is caused by wear to the motor or bearings, overhaul is often an excellent solution. This usually means that the complete ventilation unit or HRV unit does not need to be replaced.
